HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The Village of Flat Rock - The New Village Hall, May 2005

Addition and Renovations

Flat Rock, North Carolina

The Village of Flat Rock acquired the Stradley-Jones house, a 160-year-old historic structure located on Greenville Highway in Flat Rock, North Carolina. They wanted to renovate the house for office use and develop the site as a government center. An extensive effort was made to preserve the exterior appearance of the historic facade on Greenville Highway. The addition was located behind the house, thus preserving its architectural integrity.

The two spaces are connected by a seamless glass storefront, allowing the historic residence behind to be revealed. This transitional entrance and circulation space has a low, discreet roof line connecting the historic residence and addition. Elaborate street lighting and cobblestone sidewalks connect pedestrian pathways and unify this quaint community's buildings.
